„When i first had the idea of organising a non-professional around the world yacht race, almost 20 yeras ago, i couldn’t possibly have imagined just how big this evemt would become. Or indeed how many lives it would change and how many opportunities it could present those brave enough to rise the challenge.”
“Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, CBE Rd, Chairman Clipper ventures
The Clipper Race is a truly unique yacht race, open to anyone no matter how experienced, no matter how old, no matter what background. People take Clipper Race because they have a desire that sets them apart. They want to live their life to the full.
The course sets out an intriguing mix of sailing conditions and challenges for crews. These include furious storms in the South Antlantic, devastating tropical cyclones in the North Pacific, the Roaring Forties of the Southern Ocean and of course the biggest dread of all – no winds at all.
There are 15 individual races, 13 different countries will be visited, the Equator will be crossed two times, crossing the International Date Line from West towards East will give the opportunity to live one day longer.
12 identical 70 feet long, newly built yachts will start the race and fight against each other around the world.
One might start as a sailing novice (like myself) but by the end of eleven month at sea 40,000 racing miles will be recorded in the logbooks. One will make friendships (i hope so) that will last a lifetime and realize that one can achieve more that one ever thought possible (i am curious about).
To complete the Clipper Race one needs to stay mentally focused and competitive, keep in top physical shape and cope with living without or with really limited privacy on a yacht for eleven month.
